Gender Norming What exactly is a standard? According to Webster’s dictionary, a standard is a level of quality or excellence that is accepted as the norm or by which actual attainments are judged. Standards are created because someone believes that a fair and efficient form of doing something is necessary. The military is full of these standards. One of the most widely known is the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). It tests the maximum amount of push-ups and sit-ups a person can do in two minutes. Along with completing a two-mile run in the allotted time prescribed. The APFT is different from any other standardized test I have ever seen. However if the same is not a part of the written agreement then it is deemed to be a fixed price contract (Construction Industry Council. 2011). Those contracts which take a long time to mature are often vary to currency fluctuation risks. Thus if such a clause is not a part of the agreement then the person performing the construction of the asset does not possess the right to halt the construction claiming the exchange difference. But a deviation to the said rule is that if the other party agrees for the exchange difference and there exists mutual consent between the two for the same then the said contract becomes a valid one. Similarly in the said case the contractual agreement signed between the ship builder and the North Ocean Tankers does not mention the exchange fluctuation clause separately. Due to currency fluctuation, there was a devaluation of the currency by 10% and the contractor immediately stopped the performance of the contract stating that he would resume work only once he has been made good for the exchange fluctuation. Since the buyer had already taken a charter basis the same he agreed for the payment and the tanker was hence forth delivered to North Ocean tankers on time, It is a clear case of breach of contract terms and conditions since it was a fixed price contract and hence the builder had no right to halt the work. But the buyer came under the influence of the ship builder and ended up paying him the amount demanded (Petter, Leyland, 2012). Thus the very crux of the situation gets defeated because of the acceptance of the condition laid down by the builder. Therefore had the buyer filed a legal suit against the builder then he would have become liable for the compensation from him for the loss that he would have suffered due to non-fulfilment of the contract but the fact that he had agreed to the terms and made the requisite payment diluted the position of the buyer. Therefore in the said case it is difficult for the buyer to get any claim since considerable time had passed since the delivery of the tanker. Secondly it would be very difficult for him to prove in the court of law that there was a breach of contract since he had also agreed to the same and fulfilled the demand. Thirdly, the builder had not delayed the performance of his act and provided the tanker to the buyer on time (Forrester, 2015). Therefore on viewing the issues practically it is understood that the buyer has delayed in bringing any kind of legal proceedings against the ship builder, hence it seems to be difficult for him to succeed as the case shows that both the parties have performed their duties in good faith. The French and Indian War altered the political, economic, and ideological relations between Britain and American colonies. Ideologically, this War brought up resentment toward Britain this changed the political relationship between Britain and its colonists because the British were forced to unfairly tax them due to their debt. The French and Indian war transformed North America by only leaving the British and the colonists left in their region. Greedy as the British were they did not treat the colonists fair by taxing them lead to resentment that lead to the American Revolution. After the French and Indian War, North America completely changed. Before 1754 English, French, Spanish, and the Russians had a portion of North America that they had power over. After 1763 the French were completely left out and had no land at all. (Document A) This impacted Britain and American colonists politically because it lead to the Proclamation of 1763 where Native Americans believed that the white people were not allowed to settle in their land that they had inhabited for hundreds of years. (Document .B) Britain thought that with the proclamation everything would turn out great, but it did not it just angered the colonists. They were angry because they believed they had no freedom. After the French and Indian War, England had to pay off a huge debt that had been accumulating over the years. The only way they saw to pay this was to regulate trade meaning that they would have fully control and know who and what they are trading with, and to tax everything. Britain made these changes and angered the colonists even more because the colonists felt it was not fair that all of a sudden they started taxing everything. (Document F) Taxation had a huge impact on the economic relationship between the colonists and their mother country because many of these acts forced the Americans to ship their raw materials to Britain, only to later buy the finished products from them. Mercantilism was soon abandoned when the colonists rebelled. An act that really angered the colonists was the Stamp act. Colonists furious of these taxations used boycotting as their weapon, they practiced non-importation and non-consumption. Although hurting the colonists and the British, the British soon came to realize that they were not messing around.(Document G) Colonists coming together and boycotting these acts had a huge impact on the British ideological values. The colonists felt that taxation was another thing that they should be mad at the British for. It added more stuff to what was already going on. The colonists were already mad about the Proclomation and just taxing everything did not make colonists happier. The colonists soon came to understand that they had little to no freedom which lead to the idea of becoming independent. Thinking that they could stand on their own. They don’t need the British. Maple Sap Collection and Syrup Production Maple syrup is a natural forest food product and, for the most part, only produced in temperate North American woodlands. More specifically, the sugary sap is mostly collected from the sugar maple (Acer saccharum) which grows naturally in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Other maple species that can be tapped are red and Norway maple. Red maple sap tends to yield less sugar and early budding causes off flavors so its seldom used in commercial syrup operations. The basic process of sugar maple syrup production is fairly simple and has not dramatically changed over time. The tree is still tapped by boring using a hand brace and drill bit and plugged with a spout, called a spile. The sap flows into covered, tree-mounted containers or through a system of plastic tubing and is collected for processing. Converting maple sap into syrup requires removing water from the sap which concentrates the sugar into a syrup. The raw sap is boiled in pans or continuous feed evaporators where the liquid is reduced to a finished syrup of 66 to 67 percent sugar. It takes an average of 40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of finished syrup. The Maple Sap Flow Process As do most trees in temperate climates, maple trees enter dormancy during winter and store food in the form of starches and sugar. As day temps start to rise in late winter, stored sugars move up the trunk to prepare for feeding the tree growth and budding process. Cold nights and warm days increase the flow of sap and this starts what is called the sap season. During warm periods when temperatures rise above freezing, pressure develops in the tree. This pressure causes the sap to flow out of the tree through a wound or tap hole. During cooler periods when temperatures fall below freezing, suction develops, drawing water into the tree. This replenishes the sap in the tree, allowing it to flow again during the next warm period. Forest Management for Maple Sap Production Unlike managing a forest for timber production, sugarbush (term for a stand of sap trees) management does not depend on maximum annual growth or growing straight defect-free timber at an optimum stocking level of trees per acre. Managing trees for maple sap production is focused on annual syrup yield on a site where optimal sap collection is supported by easy access, adequate numbers of sap-producing trees, and forgiving terrain. A sugarbush should be managed for quality sap producing trees and less attention is paid to tree form. Trees with crooks or moderate forking are of little concern if they produce a quality sap in adequate quantities. Terrain is important and has a major influence on sap flow. Southern facing slopes are warmer which encourages early sap production with longer daily flows. Adequate accessibility to a sugarbush decreases labor and transport costs and will enhance a syrup operation. Many tree owners have opted not to tap their trees in favor of selling sap or leasing their trees to syrup producers. There must be sufficient numbers of sap producing maples available with desirable access to each tree. We recommend you check with a regional sap producers association for buyers or renters and develop an appropriate contract. The Optimal Sugarbush Tree and Stand Size The best spacing for a commercial operation is about one tree in an area measuring 30 feet x 30 feet  or 50 to 60 mature trees per acre. Trees over this size should be tapped according to its diameter: 10 to 18 inches - one tap per tree, 20 to 24 inches - two taps per tree, 26 to 30 inches - three taps per tree. On average, one tap will yield 9 gallons of sap per season. A well-managed acre might have between 70 and 90 taps 600 to 800 gallons of sap 20 gallons of syrup. The Making of a Good Sugar Tree A good maple sugar tree usually has a large crown with significant leaf surface area. The greater the crowns leaf surface of a sugar maple, the greater is the sap flow along with increased sugar content. Trees with ​crowns more than 30 feet wide produce sap in optimum quantities and grow larger faster for increased tapping. A desirable sugar tree has a higher sugar content in the sap than others; they are typically sugar maples or black maples. It is very important to have good sugar producing maples, as an increase of 1 percent in sap sugar reduces processing costs up to 50%. The average New England sap sugar content for commercial operations is 2.5%. For an individual tree, the volume of sap produced during one season varies from 10 to 20 gallons per tap. This amount depends on a specific tree, weather conditions, sap season length, and collection efficiency. A single tree can have one, two, or three taps, depending on size as mentioned above. The Changing of the Guard Ever since the nineteen fifties, the McDonald’s Corporation has been well on its way to becoming the world’s top fast food restaurant, owning 33,000 restaurants world wide. But while McDonald’s is still topping off the fast food industry, it has shown a decline in profitability and production in recent years. This lack of productivity has the investment world up in arms. Both creditors and shareholders are the least bit pleased with the current situation. So on January 1, McDonald’s Corporation will make change in the CEO position. Not only have sales declined significantly, but a loss of more than 40 billion dollars in shareholder investments was incurred under CEO Jack Greenberg. Though Greenberg has been involved in the corporation for a long time, he has been unable to restore the â€Å"fast food machine† to its original condition. While Greenberg will step down as CEO, he will remain a part of the corporation as chief executive through 2005. To replace Greenberg, McDonald’s has chosen former vice chairman, James Cantalupo, as the new CEO. Cantalupo has been a part of the company for 28 years, and is familiar with the goals and expectations of the company; but as expressed by onlookers, this is not always a good thing. McDonald’s has already made significant changes, including new cooking systems and the reorganization of billions of dollars. So why is the prominent fast food company slowly plundering? Maybe internal recruitment was not the best decision for the McDonald’s company.
